So you’ve just downloaded the latest Windows updates and now you’re being prompted to reboot.

This is problematic since you are currently downloading some files that you cannot pause, but this annoying Windows Update comes up the whole time.

Windows Update dialog box

You can postpone this update box for 10 minutes, 1 or 4 hours, but then the dialog box will just come up again. If you were downloading some important files you might not want the computer to reboot automatically.

This can get very annoying and maybe you just want to forget about it for your current session.

How to temporarily disable Windows Update nag box

Type cmd into the start menu search box. Once at the prompt, just type in the following:

net stop "windows update"

The service is now stopped and will start right back up when you reboot your computer, but at least you don’t have to deal with the annoying restart dialog for now.
